Scholarships

The prospect of managing your finances at university can seem daunting but the University of Leeds offers a comprehensive range of bursaries and scholarships, together with financial advice, to support you throughout your studies. Some schemes provide support on the basis of academic achievements while others offer support to students based on financial need or personal circumstance.

Leeds Scholarships

Summary

If you're a UK undergraduate student with a household income of less than £42,875 a year you may be eligible to apply for a means-tested undergraduate scholarship.

Value

£3,000 a year for three years (paid in cash instalments).

Head of School Excellence Scholarship

Summary

This scholarship is for you if you’re a new UK/EU rated fee-paying applicant who will start a School of Food Science and Nutrition undergraduate degree course at the University of Leeds.

Value

Up to £4,000, spread over four years, subject to satisfactory progression. £1,000 will be awarded per year of study.

Who is eligible?

This scholarship is available to you if you’re a UK/EU rated fee-paying student who achieved A*AA at A-level or equivalent. You must be new to the University and enter onto Level 1. You must not be in receipt of any other scholarship.

How to apply

No application necessary. You will automatically be considered for this scholarship.

Conditions

You must achieve a yearly attainment percentage of 70% or above (including all compulsory modules) with all modules passed at the first attempt. The scholarship will be withheld in a year if you fail to achieve 70%, but will be reinstated the following year if your performance recovers to 70% or over. £1,000 will be awarded per year of study. You won’t receive the scholarship for the industrial placement year or study abroad year.

International Undergraduate Science and Engineering Scholarship

Summary

This scholarship is for any internationally rated applicant who has been offered a place on any of the undergraduate degree courses within the School of Food Science and Nutrition.

Value

Up to £8,000, spread over four years, subject to satisfactory progression. £2,000 will be awarded per year of study.

Who is eligible?

Any international applicant who has been offered a place on any of the undergraduate degree courses within the School of Food Science and Nutrition.

How to apply

There is no separate application process for this scholarship however you will need to confirm that you meet the criteria listed below before you are able to receive the £2000 reduction on your fees.

Conditions

You must be self-funding, new to the University of Leeds, enter onto Level 1 and be classified as international for tuition fee purposes. You must not be in receipt of any other University of Leeds award.

You must achieve a yearly attainment percentage of 60% or above with all modules passed at the first attempt. The scholarship will be withheld in a year if you fail to achieve 60%, but will be reinstated the following year if your performance recovers to 60% or over. £2,000 will be awarded per year of study. You won’t receive the scholarship for the industrial placement year or study abroad year. 

If you’re a self-funding student who’s successfully completed the International Foundation Year (IFY) at the University of Leeds you’ll also be eligible for this scholarship.

Dean's Excellence Scholarship

The Dean’s Excellence Scholarship of £1000 per year of study will be awarded to UK and EU undergraduate students who have demonstrated academic excellence in their studies.

Qualification Criteria
To be awarded a scholarship you need to meet the following conditions:

  • Achieve GCE A-levels Grades A*A A, including Biology or Chemistry. Other equivalent qualifications will also be considered.
       
  • Commence a programme of study in the School of Food Science and Nutrition in September of the year of entry and be fully registered as a student on the 1st December in the same year.
       
  • Be a student paying tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.


Payment

You do not need to apply separately for this scholarship, you will qualify automatically for the award if you meet the criteria shown above. The scholarship will be paid in the January of each year of study. Payment after the first year will be paid on condition of you achieving a minimum 70% average mark over 120 credits (to include all compulsory modules) in the previous year of study.

International Scholarships

Science and Engineering Scholarships
A scholarship for self-funded students, paying fees at the International rate, entering year one, on any of the following degree courses;

BSc Food Science
BSc Food Science and Nutrition
BSc Nutrition

The University will pay £2000 of your tuition fees for each year you are registered and studying on the course, subject to meeting the required conditions, to a maximum value of £8000.

This will take the form of a fee reduction not a cash award.

There is no separate application process for this scholarship however you will need to confirm that you meet the stated criteria before you are able to receive the £2000 reduction on your fees.
