Entry requirements

PhD

To study for a PhD, you’d be expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject (2.1 or above or equivalent) or a good honours degree together with a Masters degree.

A PhD can be taken full-time or part-time:

  • Full-time: 3 years + 1 year (maximum) writing up time
  • Part-time: 5 years + 2 years (maximum) writing up time 

MPhil

To study for an MPhil, you’d be expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject (2.1 or above or equivalent) or a good honours degree together with a Masters degree.

An MPhil can be taken full-time or part-time:

  • Full-time: 2 years + 1 year (maximum) writing up time
  • Part-time: 4 years + 2 years (maximum) writing up time 

MSc by Research

To study for an MSc by Research, you’d be expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject.

An MSc by Research can be taken full-time or part-time:

  • Full-time: 1 year
  • Part-time: 2 years

English language requirements

If English isn’t your first language, you’ll need to produce evidence of a language qualification before registration as a postgraduate student.

Our School of Food Science and Nutrition will accept the following qualifications and scores:

  • IELTS - an overall band of 6.5 with no individual skill band below 6.0 in all components
  • iBT TOEFL - (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): a score of 92 overall with Listening 21; Reading 21; Speaking 23; Writing 22.

NOTE: programmes in Nutritional Epidemiology require the following qualifications and scores:

  • IELTS - an overall band of 7.0 with no individual skill band below 6.5 in all components
  • iBT TOEFL - (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language): a score of 100 overall with Listening 22; Reading 24; Speaking 24; Writing 25.
