Food Science Summer School 2017 27th - 29th June

Food Science

The School of Food Science and Nutrition will be holding a 2 night residential summer school from 27th - 29th June 2017 for Year 12 students.

The Food Science Summer School aims to give young scientists an idea of how exciting Food Science can really be, opening their eyes to this ever changing multidisciplinary science subject which affects everyone on a daily basis.

The event will give students the chance to:

    • Investigate product design with Marks & Spencer
    • Visit a leading food manufacturer
    • Use analytical techniques to understand the properties of food
    • Explore the campus and experience life at university, including staying in one of our halls of residence
    • Find out more about careers in food
    • Meet current students and graduates
    • Get information and guidance on applying to university

Further details of the programme will be sent to candidates upon receiving an offer of a place.

“I really enjoyed the Summer School and thought it was an informative and enjoyable experience. It has given me a further insight into Food Science, more than an open day can provide” 2016 Summer School Attendee

    Where is it?
Activities will be held in the School of Food Science and Nutrition on the University of Leeds campus and overnight accommodation will be provided in our Lyddon Hall residence, also on campus.

Students will be fully supervised throughout their visit, including overnight.

    How to Apply

All year 12 pupils currently studying at least one core (biology, chemistry, physics or maths) science subject at A-Level are eligible to apply. There are only 35 places available so we advise students to submit their application as soon as possible.

Due to generous sponsorship from IGD we are able to offer places free of charge, inclusive of all meals, however, we will require a refundable deposit of £50 per student to cover some of the costs should they cancel within 2 weeks of the event.

Please note: Due to the terms laid out in our funding agreement with IGD, students may only apply to one of the 5 Food Science Summer Schools at the University of Leeds, University of Reading, University of Nottingham, Cardiff Metropolitan University or Newcastle University.

    Sponsored by IGD’s
    Technical Leadership Forum

Sponsored by the Chilled Food Association

Travel arrangements and expenses will be the responsibility of the individual student; however we have 10 travel awards available for applicants who meet two of the University of Leeds Access to Leeds criteria, as outlined in the document linked below. Travel awards will be offered on a first come first served basis to eligible students.

Students must have parental/guardian consent to apply.

    Why Food Science

Food Science is a multidisciplinary subject that draws on scientific concepts from a range of disciplines, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths.

There are many societal challenges that need to be addressed by food scientists in the next few years, such as how to deal with increasing demand for safe and nutritious food in spite of reducing resources, taking into account environmental and socio-political factors that affect our food supply.

The food industry is one of the largest employers in the world, and offers excellent career opportunities to food science graduates. Scientists are constantly in demand by the industry to ensure that the challenges and demands of the market are met.

The future of our food safety and the health of our ageing population rest, in part, with food scientists and as the single largest manufacturing sector in the UK it is crucial we continue to recruit and train food scientists for the future.
