Welcome to our new Associate Professor

This month we welcome Dr. J Bernadette Moore, Associate Professor of Obesity, to our School.  As part of her longstanding interest in obesity, Bernadette’s current research is focused on characterizing the molecular basis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).  NAFLD is the hepatic manifestation of obesity and the metabolic syndrome, and is now the most common cause of liver disease affecting an estimated 30% of adults and 10% of children worldwide.  There are currently no effective pharmaceutical therapies for NAFLD; however nutrition is a key, modifiable risk factor.
Applying a variety of genomic, proteomic, and mathematical modelling approaches alongside nutritional intervention studies, Dr Moore’s long-term vision is clinical and public health translation are addressing unmet needs for the discovery of diagnostic/prognostic biomarkers (stratified medicine) and the development of novel therapeutics. Specifically, current approaches include: (i) utilizing proteomics for the identification of new biomarkers and (ii) developing and applying new systems biology tools to dissect the molecular etiology and pathogenesis of NAFLD.
