"Here in Leeds you do get a very good background into how to do research and how to find new methods, and it’s good to apply that to products."

What did you do after graduation?
I immediately applied for some jobs in the UK but more experience was needed so I moved back to my hometown, Nicosia, Cyprus to continue seeking for a job in Cyprus and EU countries.

What are you currently doing?

I have recently completed my graduate scheme at Taylors of Harrogate and I am now in the role of 'QA Technologist' there.

What does your current role involve?

My role involves ensuring products are safe, legal and of high quality. This includes analytical testing, completing food safety audits, HACCP amongst other things.

How do you use the knowledge you gained from your studies in your job?
There was a module on my degree course that covered all areas of HACCP/Food Safety. Because this module was taught so well (for example we had a guest lecture from Unilever), I developed a keen interest in food safety and quality. My role now uses pretty much every aspect taught in this module.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Definitely completing my graduate development and becoming a QA technologist. I also featured on the advert for Yorkshire Tea!

What made you decide to study at Leeds?

The moment I visited the city for the first time I knew in an instant that I wanted to study there. It has the perfect blend of having the campus feel but being directly next to the city. The facilities are also great, and there’s a real sense that the students love the city they’re in.

What do you miss most about your student days?

Having the freedom to pursue the opportunities open to you (e.g. sports, societies etc.) and being able to socialise with a large variety of people. I also miss being able to learn aspects of science for the sake of learning them rather than having to learn for the sake of a job.

What advice would you give to other students thinking of coming to Leeds University?

I would really recommend the university to any prospective students as it’s truly a special place to study. I know plenty of people that have ended up permanently re-locating to Leeds after graduating!

Did you do study abroad or an industrial placement? If so, how did you find them and what benefits would you say you gained from doing it?

I completed an industrial placement  and I learnt so much about the world of work from it. There are so many skills you learn whilst completing an internship, and creating contacts within the industry is always helpful!
