Research Postgraduates

The School offers three kinds of Research degrees for Postgraduate Students:

  • PhD
  • MPhil
  • Masters by Research

PhD

The PhD is the most internationally recognised qualification. You will carry out research training under the guidance of a supervisor/supervisors and you will produce a thesis of approximately 100,000 words.

A PhD can be taken full-time or part-time:

  • Full-time: 3 years + 1 year (maximum) writing up time
  • Part-time: 5 years + 2 years (maximum) writing up time

Candidates would be expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject (2:1 or above or equivalent) or a good honours degree together with a Masters degree for entry to a PhD programme in Food Science.

MPhil

You will carry out Research under the Guidance of a supervisor/supervisors and will produce a thesis of approximately 60,000 words.

An MPhil can be taken full-time or part-time:

  • Full-time: 2 years + 1 year (maximum) writing up time
  • Part-time: 4 years + 2 years (maximum) writing up time

Candidates would be expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject (2:1 or above or equivalent) or a good honours degree together with a Masters degree for entry to a MPhil programme in Food Science.

MSc by Research

You will carry out Research under the Guidance of a supervisor/supervisors and will produce a thesis of approximately 20,000 words.

  • Full-time: 1 year
  • Part-time: 2 years

Applicants would be expected to hold a good honours degree in a relevant subject for entry to an MSc by Research in Food Science
